Early Drawings

Teenage Years (1989-91)

Some examples of drawings from around my late teens. Charcoal was a favourite medium of mine, and I often found myself drawing big eyed moon faced people, and strange organic shapes. My drawings came mostly straight out of my imagination. Subject matter was odd at times, reflecting a troubled, yet soul searching state of mind. On the most part, my art has always retained a sense of whimsy, and a naïve and childlike sense of wonder.

Art School Years (1993-1997)

Life Drawing

I always loved life drawing classes…they are a great test of visual observation. The last three images below were from a very interesting class I had back when I was completing a Bachelor of Fine Art (Painting) at VCA in Melbourne. The teacher had set up an overhead projector with images of classical paintings projecting onto the life model and props he had set up in the room. He instructed us to ‘draw the space in-between’ the projector and the projected images. I’ll never forget it.

Drawings

Nearly everything I drew came straight out of my imagination. I would let the blank paper speak to me. Art was always a therapeutic outworking of my inner life… reflections of a state of mind. Art school had made me a little more serious. Yet, towards the end of my degree the character ‘Lily’ appeared (see images below). She was what I wanted to be….happy, joyful, free. Here are just some examples of my art from back then…
